What is a center back, and where do they play?
Protects the central area in front of the goalkeeper, either in a pair or a back three. LCB and RCB identify the left and right sides of the structure, not necessarily a player’s preferred foot.
The diagram uses a 4-3-3 setup, attacking from left to right. Yellow markers identify the position being discussed; they are not average match coordinates. For left/right pairs, the top of the diagram is the attacking team’s left side.
Responsibilities in three phases
- In possession: Receive in the first line, pass through or beyond opposing lines, or carry forward when space and cover allow.
- Out of possession: Maintain defensive spacing, track runs behind, contest the ball, and cover teammates centrally or in the channels.
- Transitions: After losing possession, protect the route to goal and delay the counterattack. After winning it, find a safe outlet to escape pressure.
The tactical discussion draws on Coaches’ Voice — The modern centre-back. The wording and exercise below are FootballCap’s own.
Position versus role
A stopper emphasizes stepping out to challenge; a covering defender emphasizes protection behind. The same pair can exchange these tasks. Avoid labeling one player as capable only of clearing the ball.
Historical data: the Defender group
| Measure in the historical dataset | Result |
|---|---|
| Records labeled Defender | 1200 |
| Records with height greater than zero | 1174 |
| Records without a valid height | 26 |
| Median height, cm | 184 |

Limitations: The dataset uses four broad labels and does not isolate CB / LCB / RCB. These are historical player records pooled across competitions, not appearances or current-season statistics. Height does not measure tactical ability and is not a selection threshold. Do not use this figure as a standard height for this position. See the methods, four groups, and downloads.
What to watch
Record when the defender steps forward and what happens behind them, not just successful tackles. More clearances may reflect longer spells under pressure rather than better performance.
A position-reading exercise
Place two center backs ahead of a goalkeeper, with one forward receiving back to goal and another making a diagonal run. Send the near center back out and check who controls the runner and newly exposed space. Then move the ball to a wing.
Use three columns: what you see, alternative options, and what you cannot yet conclude. These are original exercises; repetitions on the tactics board are not player-performance data.
