Al-Nassr 2–1 Abha: turning pressure into a narrow win

Ronaldo’s opener, Abha’s low block, and a late scare explain why Al-Nassr’s attacking edge produced only a one-goal margin.

Al-Nassr beat Abha 2–1 at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh on September 9, returning to winning ways four days after a 2–1 loss to Al-Ittihad. Ronaldo’s 22nd-minute header was his 979th career goal, according to Arab News.

Ronaldo’s opener and two more close calls

Angelo curled a corner into the six-yard box. Ronaldo rose above his marker and headed the ball against the post and in, beating Donovan Leon. In the 38th minute, Ronaldo received with his back to goal, turned, and hit the post. A minute later, Al-Hamddan headed another corner back toward him, but Leon and defender Al-Fahad combined to clear off the line.

The chances across that 17-minute spell underline the importance of dead-ball deliveries, alongside open-play attacks, in Al-Nassr’s route to goal.

Abha’s 5–4–1 protected open play but not the opening corner

Damir Buric set Abha up in a deep 5–4–1, with captain Abdullah Al-Fahad tracking Ronaldo and alternating between center-back and defensive-midfield duties depending on how far Al-Nassr advanced. The hosts were without suspended João Félix and injured Kingsley Coman, while Ange Postecoglou rested Abdulelah Al-Amri.

Abha’s numbers behind the ball restricted open-play opportunities for long stretches, but did not solve the problem at the opening set piece. In the 58th minute, Al-Hamdan doubled the lead with a finish into the far corner.

Fekir’s unexpected free kick kept the match alive

In the 75th minute, Nabil Fekir lined up a free kick from the left. Instead of crossing, he shot directly at goal, surprising the defense and goalkeeper Bento to make it 2–1. Ten minutes later, Batshuayi pressured Simakan near the end line and sent an effort just wide of the post.

FootballCap’s reading is that Fekir’s goal owed more to the quality and surprise of the delivery than an obvious structural breakdown. Batshuayi’s later chance nevertheless showed that Abha could still threaten after falling two goals behind.

Set pieces and the next test

The victory put Al-Nassr level on points with Al-Hilal and Al-Qadsiah at the top, all three having won five of their first six games. Ronaldo’s reported total left him 21 short of the 1,000-goal milestone highlighted in the original report.

The original account attributes all three goals to set pieces, although its description of Al-Hamdan’s goal does not specify the preceding restart. With Félix and Coman absent, the tactical question remains whether Al-Nassr can consistently generate open-play goals rather than depend heavily on corners and free kicks.
