Goalkeeper (GK): position, role, and responsibilities

Understand the goalkeeper role in football: positioning, responsibilities in each phase, tactical diagrams, practice ideas, and sourced historical data.

4-3-3: Goalkeeper highlighted in yellow; the team attacks from left to right.
Original FootballCap diagram · See the explanation below for the symbols.

What is a goalkeeper, and where do they play?

Protects the goal and provides a passing option behind the defenders. Sweeper-keeper describes a proactive role outside the goal area, not a twelfth position.

The diagram uses a 4-3-3 setup, attacking from left to right. Yellow markers identify the position being discussed; they are not average match coordinates. For left/right pairs, the top of the diagram is the attacking team’s left side.

Responsibilities in three phases

  • In possession: Offer an angle for a pass from the center backs and choose short or long distribution according to pressure and teammate positions.
  • Out of possession: Adjust position to the ball, organize the defense, and deal with shots and deliveries into dangerous areas.
  • Transitions: After winning possession, look for quick distribution. After losing it, adjust the distance to the defense before deciding whether to rush out.

The tactical discussion draws on FIFA Training Centre — Goalkeeping. The wording and exercise below are FootballCap’s own.

Position versus role

Do not count saves in isolation. A goalkeeper with few saves may be well protected; a completed pass can still put a teammate in trouble.

Historical data: the Goalkeeper group

Measure in the historical dataset Result
Records labeled Goalkeeper 426
Records with height greater than zero 417
Records without a valid height 9
Median height, cm 189

Limitations: The Goalkeeper label covers goalkeepers but does not distinguish the sweeper-keeper role. These are historical player records pooled across competitions, not appearances or current-season statistics. Height does not measure tactical ability and is not a selection threshold. Do not use this figure as a standard height for this position. See the methods, four groups, and downloads.

What to watch

Save percentage needs shots on target faced as its denominator. Shot quality and actions that prevent chances before a shot require separate examination; this height dataset supplies neither.

A position-reading exercise

Pause buildup just before a center back passes backward. Place two receiving options on the board, then use an opposing forward to block one route. Can you still escape without forcing the receiver to turn their back to pressure?

Use three columns: what you see, alternative options, and what you cannot yet conclude. These are original exercises; repetitions on the tactics board are not player-performance data.
