Depth describes a team’s spacing along the length of the field. When watching the team in possession, look at options ahead of the ball and support behind it.

Reading the diagram

A player high up the field and another dropping to support can offer two different ways forward. The diagram shows positioning, not which pass will succeed.

This original FootballCap diagram does not depict a real match. Green and white markers distinguish the teams. Solid lines show movement; dashed lines show passes where present. Positions are not drawn to real-world distance scale.

Common misconceptions

Depth does not mean everyone runs forward together. Excessive distances can leave the ball carrier without nearby support.

Try it yourself

Bring the highest player back toward midfield. Compare the new short option with the forward option that has disappeared.
