Arsenal beat Napoli 1–0 on September 9, 2026, through Martin Ødegaard’s 75th-minute goal. Sky Sports described the visitors creating an advantage but missing chances before the breakthrough. The narrow score should therefore be read through conversion, not just which side drove play.
Possession needs a useful receiving angle
Circulating the ball in front of a defensive block can move opponents around. It becomes a real advantage when a pass puts the receiver in position to advance or shoot. Receiving back to goal under pressure is very different from receiving while facing the goal.
Look at the reception before Arsenal’s attempts: did the shooter have time to adjust their body, from which direction could a defender close, and was another pass available? The number of attacks alone cannot answer those questions.
A late goal does not require rushing every attack
UEFA described Ødegaard finishing a combination with a shot that went in off the inside of the post. At 0–0, an attacking side can be tempted to force passes or shoot from poor angles. Maintaining the rhythm of combinations can produce a better opening, provided protection remains behind the ball in case possession is lost.
The 75th-minute goal does not establish that one particular substitution decided the game without examining the preceding sequence. What is clear is that Arsenal converted a chance into a lead with substantially less time remaining.
The dominant side still needs its goalkeeper
UEFA also noted Raya’s saves from Napoli. A team that creates more can still be punished on the opponent’s few escapes. Territorial control and the elimination of danger are different achievements.
Arsenal settled the game late on a day when their finishing had not fully matched the opportunities described in the reports. Napoli kept the result open until the 75th minute, but Arsenal took the decisive chance.
