Stuttgart beat Viking 3–1 on September 9, 2026, in the Norwegian club’s first Champions League match in its 127-year history. Ermedin Demirović scored in the 20th, 26th, and 32nd minutes. Zlatko Tripić’s 22nd-minute equalizer was Viking’s first goal in the competition.
Viking’s landmark reply lasted four minutes
Bundesliga.com described Jeff Chabot advancing on the left, finding Chris Führich, and the move reaching Angelo Stiller for a low delivery finished by Demirović in the 20th minute. Two minutes later, Tripić beat Finn Jeltsch one-on-one and equalized.
Undav supplied the next two goals
In the 26th minute, Demirović lifted a finish over Østbø from Deniz Undav’s pass. Undav supplied him again in the 32nd, with the goalkeeper unable to deal cleanly with the finish. AP called it the first hat trick of the 2026–27 Champions League season.
The original notes that Demirović had previously scored once in eight appearances during Stuttgart’s earlier league-phase campaign, when they finished 26th of 36. Adding three to one gives four career goals; the original claim that the total tripled is an arithmetic error.
No second-half goals, but chances remained
ESPN’s cited totals were 17 Stuttgart shots, three on target, and 1.95 xG, against Viking’s nine shots, three on target, and 0.74 xG. Bjørdal had an effort blocked early after the break, Führich sent a free kick over, and Undav hit the post in stoppage time.
A chance to improve on the previous campaign
Demirović told DAZN it was an ideal start for him and the team, adding that Stuttgart understood earlier mistakes and wanted to improve. The result followed a 4–1 Bundesliga win over Köln, extending a productive attacking spell into Europe.
