What is a wide midfielder, and where do they play?
Plays at either end of the midfield line, such as LM and RM in a 4-4-2. When comparing the role with a winger in a front three, examine defensive positions as well as the starting formation.
The diagram uses a 4-4-2 setup, attacking from left to right. Yellow markers identify the position being discussed; they are not average match coordinates. For left/right pairs, the top of the diagram is the attacking team’s left side.
Responsibilities in three phases
- In possession: Maintain a wide outlet and support behind or alongside the forwards.
- Out of possession: Connect with the central midfielder and fullback so the team is not split apart in the outside channel.
- Transitions: Determine whether to pressure near the ball or drop into support as possession changes hands.
The tactical discussion draws on Coaches’ Voice — Glossary: Wide midfielder. The wording and exercise below are FootballCap’s own.
Position versus role
LM/RM does not require hugging the sideline throughout the game. Watch who supplies width when the player moves inside and who takes responsibility for opposing runners.
Historical data: the Midfielder group
| Measure in the historical dataset | Result |
|---|---|
| Records labeled Midfielder | 1257 |
| Records with height greater than zero | 1231 |
| Records without a valid height | 26 |
| Median height, cm | 180 |

Limitations: The dataset uses four broad labels and does not isolate LM / RM. These are historical player records pooled across competitions, not appearances or current-season statistics. Height does not measure tactical ability and is not a selection threshold. Do not use this figure as a standard height for this position. See the methods, four groups, and downloads.
What to watch
Useful notes include positions while teammates have the ball, the starting point of pressure, and the space left after stepping out. Do not judge defensive duties by goals scored.
A position-reading exercise
Build two lines of four. Send the near wide midfielder out and mark the gap to the CM. Move the whole line rather than only one player, then compare access into the center.
Use three columns: what you see, alternative options, and what you cannot yet conclude. These are original exercises; repetitions on the tactics board are not player-performance data.
