Wingback (LWB / RWB): position, role, and responsibilities

Understand the wingback role in football: positioning, responsibilities in each phase, tactical diagrams, practice ideas, and sourced historical data.

3-5-2: Wingback highlighted in yellow; the team attacks from left to right.

What is a wingback, and where do they play?

Works on either flank around a back three. Left and right wingbacks often drop into a back five when defending; responsibilities change with the phase of play.

The diagram uses a 3-5-2 setup, attacking from left to right. Yellow markers identify the position being discussed; they are not average match coordinates. For left/right pairs, the top of the diagram is the attacking team’s left side.

Responsibilities in three phases

  • In possession: Provide width and a high outlet, combining with the outside center back and same-side midfielder to progress the ball.
  • Out of possession: Drop alongside the back three or step out to press according to the structure. The far-side wingback tucks in when protection in front of goal is needed.
  • Transitions: From a high attacking position, choose between counter-pressing and recovering. The player providing inside cover should already be identified.

The tactical discussion draws on Coaches’ Voice — Wing-backs. The wording and exercise below are FootballCap’s own.

Position versus role

A wingback is not simply a faster fullback. A back three and the team’s allocation of central players create different tasks; the two flanks can also operate asymmetrically.

Historical data: the Defender group

Measure in the historical dataset Result
Records labeled Defender 1200
Records with height greater than zero 1174
Records without a valid height 26
Median height, cm 184

Source: Players — Pappalardo et al. (2019), CC BY 4.0. FootballCap recalculated these values from the original file. This is a transformed summary, not a table supplied by the authors.

Limitations: The dataset uses four broad labels and does not isolate LWB / RWB. These are historical player records pooled across competitions, not appearances or current-season statistics. Height does not measure tactical ability and is not a selection threshold. Do not use this figure as a standard height for this position. See the methods, four groups, and downloads.

What to watch

For physical data, check the units and the provider’s threshold for high-speed running. The player dataset used here has no distance-covered information, so it cannot establish a mileage standard for wingbacks.

A position-reading exercise

In a 3-5-2, send the left wingback high and lose possession on that side. Move the outside center back wide and count the players left centrally. Repeat with the right wingback staying deeper.

Use three columns: what you see, alternative options, and what you cannot yet conclude. These are original exercises; repetitions on the tactics board are not player-performance data.
