A high press is coordinated pressure in the opponent’s half, intended to regain possession close to their goal or force decisions under pressure.
Reading the diagram
The arrows point toward the players building from the right side of the diagram. Watch both the first presser and the teammates closing the next options.
This original FootballCap diagram does not depict a real match. Green and white markers distinguish the teams. Solid lines show movement; dashed lines show passes where present. Positions are not drawn to real-world distance scale.
Common misconceptions
One forward chasing the goalkeeper is not enough to establish that the whole team is pressing high. Without support from the lines behind, opponents may bypass the first wave.
Try it yourself
Place a receiver behind the pressing group. Find a way to block the pass to them and record which other space you must concede.
Keep observations separate from explanations. Test tactical ideas on the tactics board. For metrics, establish the definition and data source before calculating.
